President’s Message

Our Club hosted the OFAH Annual Meeting in Pt Elgin on November 16 & 17. Thank you for a job well done to everyone who helped in any way. Your extra effort has once again made our Club stand tall.

Len O’Conner on behalf of the LHFC runs a program called Tackle Share. What he does is take Rods, Reels & Tackle to surrounding Libraries and anyone can use their Library Card to withdraw the tackle and fish for a day or two and return the equipment the same as a book. This program has been so successful that at any given time during the summer 72% of the tackle is signed out. Now more Libraries want on board and there is a shortage of gear. We all have rods, reels, hooks and sinkers collecting dust so why not bring this tackle to our annual Christmas Party on December 13 and donate it to this worthy cause. We will have a table setup for any donations and if you cannot make it call Len at 519-832-2249 to donate.

Many questions have been asked about our new MNR Minister being from Toronto and labelled a so called “Tree Hugger”. What is the outlook? Our last Minister was from the North, pro fishing and hunting and yet our budgets were cut year after year. He said and did nothing and that is why he is now out of that position. I’m willing to give her a chance. Let’s hope she lives up to the many challenges ahead and puts this department back in order.

On behalf of the Executive of the LHFC here’s wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and God Bless!

Yours in Conservation Ray Walser

Salmon Hatchery Report

So far everything is running smoothly. The Owen Sound batch of eggs are essentially hatched out and the Saugeen batch are at eye-up. Shocking of the last batch of eggs will probably take place in a week or so. I expect we’ll start feeding the first batch by end of December early January and the second batch will be hatching out at that time.

Trout Hatchery Report

Our egg trays are prepared for the receipt of brown trout eggs from the Tarentarous Fish Culture Station. We could have eggs later this week. Our rainbows are doing well and we are starting to sort them by size for better growth and less cannibalism. Fences are going up around the tanks to keep the fish in the tanks and off the floor.

A big thank you goes to Frank Gurr who changed our locks on the hatchery and cut a new set of keys. Frank does this every 5 years or so for us to keep control over who has access. If anyone doesn't have a new key and has a demonstratable need for one - see Al Wilkins.

A thank you also goes to the Bruce Resource Stewardship Network who made a generous donation to help pay for the new aeration system installed in the hatchery. The combined partnerships of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and the Bruce Resource Stewardship Network fully paid for this valuable hatchery system.

Speaking of partnerships - one came together to build a new storage shed at our hatchery. Bill Zoppi (A Club Member) cut some large popular trees on his property on the Peninsula. He loaded up the logs and took them to Al Beaith (Another Club Member) who used his portable sawmill to cut the logs into lumber. Bill then delivered them to the hatchery. Steve Carvell, Rene Marcone, Barry Stinson ( More Club Members), then used this lumber, along with some surplus dock materials and recycled doors to build a very nice storage shed for us to keep sensitive parts out of the humid hatchery air.

This is just a small example of how, when we work together, we can make good things happen!!

Al Wilkins

General Meeting Mini Draws

We are happy to say the mini-draws held at our General Meetings will be back. This is due in part by the generous donations of a couple of our local Tackle and Sporting Stores. We would like to thank the following 2 stores:

Humour On The Lake

“Doctor, is it true that eating fish stimulates the brain?”

“Maybe,” replied the Doctor.

“One thing is sure - fishing stimulates the imagination!”
