US Congress Wants Trump To Stop Nuclear Waste Site

    Feb. 1st, 2017

WASHINGTON — Several members of Michigan’s congressional delegation asked President Donald Trump this week to urge Canada to deny a long-standing request to bury low- and intermediate-level nuclear waste in an underground facility not far from Lake Huron.

Thirteen members of Congress wrote Trump on Tuesday about Ontario Power Generation’s proposal to build the Deep Geologic Repository near Kincardine, Ontario, asking that his administration work with that of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s to force the company to “explore other options.”

Among the 13 letter’s signers were eight from Michigan, including U.S. Rep. Paul Mitchell, R-Dryden, who replaced former U.S. Rep. Candice Miller representing a district that skirts Lake Huron, the St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair, and U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint Township, who has led opposition to the project for years.

Others signing the letter from Michigan included U.S. Reps. Jack Bergman, R-Watersmeet; Mike Bishop, R-Rochester; Debbie Dingell, D-Dearborn; Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland; Sander Levin, D-Royal Oak, and Dave Trott, R-Birmingham.

Last week, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, which is considering the proposal, extended a deadline for public comments to March 6. In December, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) said it looked at other sites but that those “will likely result in greater environmental effects.” The company has maintained for years that public health and safety won’t be compromised by the project.

In the letter, the members of Congress said there is no reason to put the region at risk with such a project, writing, “Given the close proximity of the Great Lakes and the vast amounts of land available for alternate sites, OPG’s proposal is an unnecessary risk.”

“In spite of these concerns, according to a recent report from OPG, ‘there is little interest among the general public regarding the … project.’ We emphasize that is not the case and we encourage you (to) convey that sentiment to the Canadian government,” the letter said

Trumps says he's a deal maker... make a deal, stop taking water from the lakes, and we can consider moving the DGR.
