Annual Spring Trout
Derby
Grant Ferris
Grey/Bruce Outdoors
The rules are out for this
year’s Georgian Triangle Spring Trout Derby now, the first of the big 2002
derbies and a sure sign that spring is here. The derby has been shortened
to ten days starting at 12:01 am Friday April 19 and closing at 8:00 pm
Sunday April 28. Entry fees are $20 for individuals and $30 per family
based on husband, wife and children under age 16.
Eligible waters include all
those legally open for fishing in the Georgian Bay watershed with fish
entries restricted to salmon over 10 pounds and rainbow or brown trout
over five pounds.
Weigh stations are the same
as last year: Great Lakes Outfitters on Highway #26 East Collingwood, Rick’s
Happi Hooka in Collingwood, Penny’s Bait and Tackle on Highway #26 in Thornbury,
Watson’s Tackle House in Owen Sound and Outback Tackle in Wiarton. All
weigh stations will be open from 9:00 am until 8:00 pm daily except the
final day when they will close at 8:00 pm.
Prizes consist of a first
place trophy and a monetary award of $1,000 for the heaviest salmon, brown
and rainbow trout, $500 for the second heaviest of each of the three categories
and $250 for the third heaviest of each of the three categories. In all
three categories 4th to 10th place finishers will receive $100.
There will be lottery prizes
drawn from ticket sales at the awards ceremony May 4th when all prizes
will be presented.
A full listing of all derby
rules will be available at the listed weigh stations.
This derby is a great Georgian
Bay angler tradition and generates funds that are returned to the resource
by the GTAA. Even if you don’t win a prize you will be winning by helping
the club protect and enhance our natural resources.
