Family Fishing
Derby 2002
Grant Ferris
Grey-Bruce Outdoors
On July 7, Port Elgin hosted
a fun event that was timed to coincide with Ontario’s annual “Fish licence-free”
weekend. There were 87 children registered for the shore-fishing challenge
and just like the previous two years, every kid received a prize.
Bait was provided for free
courtesy of J&S Tackle, there were a number of rods and reels to loan
out thanks to the OFAH, cotton candy was given out to all the kids from
“The Station” at the harbour and Port Elgin Canadian Tire were major supporters
and provided prizes for every child involved. Lake Huron Fishing Club director
Len O’Connor weighed and identified the fish for the kids and Port Elgin
Promotion Committee’s Coordinator Yvonne King ran the whole show.

this year's Family Fishing
Derby.
As an added bonus, The Station
ran a draw for an inflatable beach toy that was won by Sarah McAllister
from Port Elgin.
All the fish were returned
to the harbour waters alive after being weighed in, hopefully to grow bigger
for next year’s Free Fishing Derby.
